Facing Another Big Decision

This one has to do with my career.

I spend 2-3 hours a day commuting into the city for my dream job. I love my job, but it leaves me no free personal time, or time with the boys other than what we spend on dinner, bath-time, and reading before bed. I am worried about when J* starts Kindergarten in the fall, and when they both start after-school sports in a few years. Will I be the mom who CAN'T go to the games?

Its not that I was looking for an immediate solution to these questions. But one popped up yesterday. My old job, which is 4 minutes from my house, is available, and my old boss took me to dinner last night to pursue re-hiring me.

Its not my dream job . . . it'll be a step back in title, and a world away from my current career path (it would be clinical instead of research), but it is an ideal situation in every other way.

So I am faced with the horrible decision of choosing career over family. And its making my stomach very ill.

Oh man that is a tough one. I guess you really have to decide what truly makes you happy. If you are totally content in your situation now then keep it and you will find a way to make it work. However, if you are wishing a lot that you were home more, have lots of guilt or just feel too stressed because the commute is killing you then make a change. It is not like you can't go back to it someday. They won't be little forever. Just my thoughts.

That is a tough one. I think you need to do what you feel is right, for right now. You still have a couple years before Jax will really get into sports that require after school activity and Coop is still a baby. I think if you go to the job with the lesser commute and more time at home then it would be hard to go back to your current job down the road. Time to get out the pad of paper and make a pro's and con's list!

good luck. I think the right decision is very different for everyone.

My own experience has been that the kids need me MORE now that they are older than they did when they were babies. I know that sound counter-intuitive. I actually cut my hours back even further when they started school...

Good luck. Either way, you will make it work!

The answer is already in front of you - just listen and you will know what is the right decision for you.

Sometimes its not what you first think it should be.

Good luck

You know, I quit my job to stay home with my family for a while because that's what we really needed. I've never regretted it.

Good luck with whatever you choose!
